The Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra gives the West Coast Premiere of Rodríguez’ A Metaphor for Power
Iván Enrique Rodríguez has been chosen to be one of the composers-in-residence of the legendary Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music for the 2022 concert season, and the festival’s 60th anniversary. His symphonic work A Metaphor for Power will be receiving its West Coast Premiere by the festival’s orchestra under the baton of the world renowned and Grammy Award winning conductor Cristian Măcelaru along side works by Stacy Garrop, Paola Prestini, and John Harbison.
The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music is an annual Festival dedicated to contemporary symphonic music by living composers. According to Jesse Rosen, CEO of the League of American Orchestras, the Festival is "distinctive for being focused entirely on contemporary works." Each year, a tenured orchestra gathers in Santa Cruz, California to rehearse five programs of contemporary music, often world, US, or West Coast premieres. Most of the composers whose work is performed each season come to the Festival to be in residence and participate in the rehearsals and performances of their work, as well as to participate in public panel discussions, lectures, and concert introductions. The Festival also presents guest artists and ensembles known for contemporary music performance, such as Kronos Quartet or eighth blackbird.
The festival has a rich history with illustrious composers such as John Cage, Aaron Copland, Carlos Chávez, Christopher Rouse, Jennifer Higdon, Kevin Puts, Michael Daugherty, Philip Glass, John Adams, James MacMillan, Osvaldo Golijov, Caroline Shaw, Wynton Marsalis, and Tan Dun among others.
The concert will take place on July 30th, 2022 at 7:00pm at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
